This level 6 trauma focused diploma is aimed at professionals who currently work with strategic treatment planning dictated by symptom cluster analysis and are applying a top down approach, this is all covered within the ITS Level 5 . However the Level 6 has a focus on working with a bottom up (Limbic, brainstem and body based processing) approach to processing complex trauma and PTSD. This requires practitioners to be more experienced and are adept at top down processing while integrating a neuroscience based understanding throughout the treatment process of the case studies.

This course works within the UK Psychological Trauma Society's guidelines for Complex Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in adults. The three phased approach is considered the gold standard approach for treating complex trauma and includes:
Safety & stabilisation - Addressing “issues of personal safety and development of self and ego capacities (i.e. tolerating and modulating strong emotions). This initial phase focuses on the client's inner experiences, addressing memories, emotions and sensations including flashbacks. It aims to reduce self injurious behaviour, addictions, pathological dissociation and extreme emotion dysregulation. This will then create internal and external safety to disengage the ‘emergency’ brain (limbic system) and to activate the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex).
This accredited diploma aims to provide service workers and practitioners with the tools required to work effectively with complex trauma and PTSD.
